Darning Egg

£12.00

This darning egg is a vintage treasure from the 1930s / 1940s, made from solid wood sections. These have been formed and polished to create a smooth darning surface so that the item being repaired didn’t snag or catch.

In the days before mass production darning worn socks, stockings or other items of clothing was just one of the jobs that had to be done from time to time. This solid wooden darning egg provided the ideal way to hold the garment you were working on securely so that it could be mended. Wooden mushroom shapes were the most common, so this is an unusual item.

It will make a lovely addition to your sewing accessories and is perfect for anyone who collects vintage sewingalia, eggs or treen (items constructed of wood). It is in good condition with a few surface marks from use. There is a very small circular indent where the egg was held whilst it was being made.

All measurements are approximate.

Measures: 7.5cms in (l) and 5cms (diameter)
